For most Singaporean families, Chinese New Year cleaning is more than just a yearly tidy up. It is a tradition. The idea is simple. You sweep out the dust, clutter, and bad luck from the year that is ending, and you make space for fresh energy and new opportunities to come in. Whether your family is deeply traditional or you just enjoy walking into a sparkling home on the first day of the new year, a proper spring clean is one of those rare chores that pays you back many times over.
The challenge in Singapore is that we are usually doing this in tight HDB or condo spaces, in the middle of school terms or work deadlines, and often with reunion dinner less than two weeks away. The good news is that a structured plan turns the whole thing from a stressful sprint into a series of short, satisfying sessions. Here is the checklist our team uses to help busy families get their homes ready for the new year.
When should you start your CNY spring cleaning?
Tradition says all major cleaning should be finished before the first day of the new year, because sweeping on day one is believed to sweep away your good fortune. In practice, most families in Singapore start two to three weeks before reunion dinner. That gives you enough weekends to break the work into chunks without sacrificing your sleep.
If your home is small and well maintained, one full weekend plus two evenings during the week is usually enough. If you have not done a deep clean in a long time, give yourself three weekends. And if you are thinking of repainting, replacing curtains, or having the sofa shampooed, book those services at least three weeks early. Cleaning companies, upholsterers, and aircon servicing teams all get fully booked in the run-up to the festive period.
Before you start: a few cultural reminders
You do not need to follow every superstition, but they are worth knowing so you can choose what feels right for your family.
- Finish all sweeping and mopping by the eve. On the first day of the new year, leave the brooms and mops in their cupboard.
- Avoid washing your hair on day one. Some families extend this to laundry and dishwashing too. If that feels impractical, just plan a lighter day.
- Throw out the old, but be selective. Old, broken items represent the old year. Clear them out. But avoid throwing things away on day one.
- Open windows after cleaning. Letting fresh air through is symbolic of inviting good energy and prosperity inside.
With that in mind, here is the room-by-room playbook.
Living room: the heart of reunion gatherings
The living room is where guests will sit, where ang pows will be exchanged, and where the family altar (if you have one) takes pride of place. It deserves the most attention.
Declutter first
Before any cleaning, do a 30-minute decluttering pass. Old magazines, cables you no longer use, expired vouchers, single socks that have been hiding under the sofa, all of it goes. Clear surfaces look bigger and more inviting, and you will find cleaning much faster afterwards.
Top to bottom, dry to wet
Always work from top to bottom so falling dust lands on surfaces you have not cleaned yet. Start with ceiling fans and light fittings, then air-conditioner vents, then picture frames and shelves, then TV consoles, then sofa, and finally the floor.
For the ceiling fan, lay a long pillowcase over each blade and pull it back toward you. The dust collects inside the case instead of falling onto your sofa. It is one of the most satisfying cleaning hacks you will ever try.
Soft furnishings
Send sofa covers, cushion covers, and curtains for laundry or dry cleaning. If your sofa is a fixed fabric type, vacuum every crevice with the upholstery attachment, then sprinkle a thin layer of bicarbonate of soda over the cushions, leave for 20 minutes, and vacuum off. It absorbs trapped odours.
For leather sofas, a soft microfibre cloth dampened with a 50:50 mix of distilled water and white vinegar works well, followed by a leather conditioner. Avoid baby wipes, which contain chemicals that dry out leather over time.
Floors
Vacuum first, then mop. For tiles or vinyl, a few drops of dish soap in warm water cuts grime nicely. For parquet or laminate, use as little water as possible and dry immediately.
Kitchen: the most important room to deep clean
The kitchen will be working overtime during reunion dinner and the festive visiting period. A truly thorough clean now will save you constant wiping later.
The fridge purge
Empty everything out. Throw away expired sauces, mystery containers, and that bottle of chilli oil from 2023. Wipe shelves and drawers with warm soapy water. For lingering odours, place a small open container of bicarbonate of soda or activated charcoal at the back of the fridge.
Pantry and cabinets
Go through every cabinet. Toss expired items. Wipe down the inside of each cabinet, and consider relining shelves with fresh liner paper. Group similar items together so you can find ingredients quickly during the busy cooking days.
Stove, hood, and oven
The hood filter is usually the most neglected and most rewarding to clean. Soak it in hot water with a generous squeeze of dish soap and a few tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda for 30 to 45 minutes, then scrub gently. The transformation is dramatic.
For a heavily greased stovetop, make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, spread it over the surface, leave for 15 minutes, then wipe off with a damp microfibre cloth. For ovens, use a commercial oven cleaner if your model allows, or repeat the bicarbonate paste method on the interior glass.
Sink, taps, and tiles
Scrub the sink with a non-scratch sponge and a paste of bicarbonate of soda. Polish taps with a microfibre cloth and a touch of white vinegar to remove water spots. For tile grout that has gone grey, an old toothbrush dipped in a bicarbonate of soda paste works wonders.
Bedrooms: a fresh sleep for the new year
The bedrooms get less foot traffic but they are where you will recover from all that cleaning, hosting, and visiting. Treat them well.
Mattress and bedding
Strip every bed. Wash sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers on a hot cycle if the fabric allows. Vacuum the mattress, then sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the surface, leave for at least an hour, and vacuum off. If your pillows are washable, give them a turn through the machine too. Pillows older than two years should usually be replaced.
Wardrobe edit
Pull out anything you have not worn in the past 12 months. Donate what is still in good condition. This is also the perfect time to wipe down wardrobe interiors, vacuum the corners, and refold or rehang everything neatly. A handful of silica gel sachets at the back of each shelf will help fight Singapore's relentless humidity.
Under the bed
It is the dustiest spot in most bedrooms. Vacuum thoroughly, throw out anything that has been sitting there forgotten for a year, and consider getting under-bed storage boxes for the items you do want to keep. Lifting clutter off the floor instantly makes the room feel calmer.
Bathrooms: shine before the visiting starts
Visitors will use your guest bathroom. A spotless one signals that the rest of the home is just as well looked after.
- Apply a foaming bathroom cleaner to walls, floor, and the inside of the toilet bowl. Let it dwell for 10 to 15 minutes while you wipe down mirrors and surfaces.
- Scrub tile grout and corners with an old toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly.
- Polish chrome taps and shower heads with white vinegar to dissolve limescale.
- Wash bath mats, replace any old toothbrushes, and refresh the soap and hand towels.
- Place a small bowl of bicarbonate of soda or a few drops of essential oil in a corner to keep the space smelling neutral, never overpowering.
The often-forgotten spots
These are the areas most home cleaners (and homeowners) miss, and they make a huge difference once tackled.
- Air-conditioner vents and filters. Vacuum the filter mesh and wipe the louvres. If it has been more than nine months since your last servicing, book a chemical wash.
- Window grilles, tracks, and corners. Use a stiff brush and a damp cloth. The amount of grime that comes out is impressive.
- Door frames and skirting boards. A microfibre cloth wrapped around a flat tool reaches into corners.
- Light switches, door handles, and remote controls. Disinfect with a wipe.
- Behind and under heavy furniture. Get a partner to help shift the sofa and bed.
- The shoe rack at the entrance. A clean entryway sets the tone for the whole home.
The two-week countdown plan
If a single weekend feels overwhelming, here is how to spread the work out comfortably.
Two weeks before: Declutter every room. Bag up donations and dispose of broken items. Book any services you need, including aircon servicing, upholstery, and professional cleaning.
One week before: Tackle the kitchen and one bathroom. Send curtains, sofa covers, and bedding for laundry.
Three days before: Deep clean bedrooms, mop floors, polish surfaces, and clean windows.
One day before reunion dinner: Final touch ups. Put fresh flowers on the dining table, light a clean-burning candle, and enjoy the result.
When to call in professional help
Sometimes the smartest gift you can give yourself is a couple of extra hands. A professional team can handle a full HDB or condo deep clean in a single visit, leaving you free to focus on cooking, decorating, and spending time with the people who actually matter during the festive period.
This is also a good time to book if anyone in the family has been ill, if you are moving in just before the new year, or if you simply did not have time during the year to keep up with deep cleaning tasks.
Our team is fully MOM-licensed, trained in Singapore homes, and familiar with the cultural rhythms of the season. We are happy to plan a single deep clean before reunion dinner or a regular schedule that keeps your home effortlessly clean throughout the year.
